Ally is a bank, and Chime is a financial technology company that works through partner banks. Both offer savings with no minimum balance, but they pay interest very differently.

Full disclosure: Taylor Price, who runs Priceless Tay, owns Fifecta, so keep that in mind as you read this comparison.

Our take

Pick Ally if you want one savings rate on every balance and buckets to organize your goals, and pick Chime if your paycheck already lands there and you qualify for its higher Chime Plus or Chime Prime rates.

Priceless Tay

Short answer

Ally pays one variable rate on every balance and holds your deposits itself. Chime pays a rate that depends on your membership tier, and its higher tiers tie to qualifying direct deposits. Chime savings also requires a Chime checking account. Choose Ally for simplicity, and Chime if you already bank there and qualify.

How Ally and Chime differ

Ally Bank is a Member FDIC bank, and Ally says the same savings APY applies across all balance tiers, with a $0 minimum opening deposit and no minimum balance. Ally also says you can download your account activity as a CSV or Quicken (QFX) file.

Chime says it's a financial technology company, not a bank. Its banking services come from The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., Members FDIC, and Chime says certain conditions must be met for pass-through deposit insurance to apply. Chime's savings rate depends on your membership tier, and its higher tiers tie to qualifying direct deposits. You need an active Chime Checking Account to open savings, and at least $0.01 in savings to earn interest.

You can look up any bank on the FDIC's BankFind tool (2026). The table above shows each current rate with the date we checked it.

Which one fits your Money Type?

Priceless Tay sorts money habits into four Money Types: Strategist, Spender, Saver and Scrambler. Your type tells you which fix to make first, and it's a quick way to judge whether an app will help you or just look nice.

  • Strategists: Compare Chime's rate for your own tier against Ally's single rate before you move money.
  • Spenders: Ally's savings buckets and Chime's savings goals both let you name what the money is for, which makes it harder to spend. Pair it with the Spender first fix, Sleep on It.
  • Savers: Either account can hold your emergency fund, as long as the extra goes somewhere it can grow. Pair it with the Saver first fix, Put It to Work.
  • Scramblers: Neither account has a minimum balance, so you can start with whatever is left after the bills are covered. Pair it with the Scrambler first fix, Bills First.

Not sure which one you are? Take the free Money Types quiz. It takes about two minutes.

These are other people's opinions, not Priceless Tay's. We quote public reviews and posts word for word, link each one and show its date, but we haven't checked the claims in them. A post counts toward a theme when it uses one of that theme's keywords, so a mention can be praise or a complaint.
