Bills First

On payday, pay the bills, or set aside the money for them, before anything else, every time. Scramblers don't need another budget template. You need one default order on payday, so you stop deciding from scratch every time.

Where you are, and where this goes

Start with your First Fix this week. The Rich Routine™ takes you the rest of the way over time.

  1. Where most people start

Pay whatever feels most urgent that day.

Paying by urgency means a different order every week, and something always slips.

  2. This week: your First Fix

Bills first. The day you get paid, pay your bills or set the money aside for them, before anything else.

Same order every payday, so the bills are covered before the rest of the week happens.

  3. Where it ends up

Set bills to pay automatically on payday, so it happens without you.

Once it's automatic, payday stops being a decision you have to get right.

Why bills first works for Scramblers

When payday has no set order, the bill you noticed first gets paid before the bill that's due first. That's how late fees show up even in months when the money was there. They come from timing more than income.

Bills First gives every payday the same order. The bills get covered the day the money lands, and what's left is yours to use for the rest of the pay period without wondering what you forgot.

The Map Bills to Paydays planner does steps two and three for you: enter your bills and paydays, and it shows which paycheck covers each one.

What counts as a bill

A bill is anything with a due date and a cost if it's late. That covers housing, utilities, phone and internet, insurance, car and other loan payments, childcare, and the minimum payment on every card.

  • Groceries, gas, and other everyday needs aren't bills, but they come next on payday, before anything optional.
  • Extra payments on debt are a later step. Bills First covers the minimums so nothing goes late.
  • Bills that come a few times a year, like car registration or an annual subscription, become a monthly amount. Set that amount aside each payday so the money is already there when the bill arrives.

When it gets tricky

Tap the one that sounds like you.

The paycheck doesn't cover every bill

Cover what keeps a roof over your head, the lights on, and you getting to work first. Then call any company you can't pay in full before the due date. Many will set up a payment plan or give you more time if you ask before the bill is late.

A bill is due right before payday

Ask to move the due date. Many companies will change it with one call or a setting in your account. You can say: "I'd like to move my due date to the 20th so it lines up with my paycheck. Can you do that on this account?"

Rent is bigger than one paycheck

Split it across two paychecks. The first paycheck sets its half aside in the bills account, and the second one brings the rest before the due date.

Someone asks for money on payday

The bills still go first, then you decide with what's left. "Let me get my bills paid and I'll let you know tonight" gives you room to say yes or no with real numbers.

How you'll know it's working

After Bills First

Once the same order has worked for a few paydays, set those bills to pay automatically on payday. That's the last step on the ladder above, and it means payday no longer depends on you remembering.

Then the rest of the paycheck can get its own order. The FUNDS planner gives Needs, Desires, Unexpected, and Stash a share of every payday. That order is what finally makes room for saving and investing, which is how a Scrambler gets from catching up to retiring rich.

Common questions

Bills First is the Scrambler First Fix: on payday, pay the bills, or set aside the money for them, before anything else, every time. It gives payday one order that doesn't change, so the bills are covered before the rest of the week happens.

Yes, or move the money for them into a separate bills account that day. Either way, the money for bills is set aside before anything else can use it. Paying early doesn't cost you anything, and it removes the chance of forgetting.

Use the same rule each time money lands: cover the bills due before your next expected deposit first. Keep a list of bills with due dates so you can check it every time money comes in, not just on a set day.

Not on day one. Do Bills First by hand for a few paydays so you know the order works and the money is there. Then automate it. Autopay on top of an unclear order can move money before it's ready.
