AI and your money

How to Use AI With Your Money Safely

Asking AI about money only helps when it can see your real numbers. Here's what it can do, the three ways to give it those numbers, and how to keep your accounts safe while you do.

What AI Can and Can't Do

It can

  • Explain where your money went last month in plain English
  • Spot subscriptions and bills you forgot about
  • Turn your numbers into a plan you can follow
  • Answer "can I afford this?" from your real budget, when it can see it

It can't

  • Know your numbers unless you connect or share them
  • Replace a licensed advisor for taxes, legal, or investment decisions
  • Be right every time, so check anything that matters
  • Make you follow the plan. That part is still you.

Three Ways to Connect

  1. 1

    Built-in Finances in ChatGPT

ChatGPT has its own money feature. It links bank accounts through Plaid and, separately, your credit through Experian. Setup and 20 prompts are in How to set up Finances in ChatGPT.

  2. 2

    A money app's connector (MCP)

Your budget app connects to your assistant through an AI connector, often built on MCP. Your bank stays linked to the app, and the assistant asks the app. Compare them in the finance MCP directory, or see how to connect your budget to Claude.

  3. 3

    Upload or paste your numbers

No connection at all. You paste in a statement or a few totals and ask your question. It's the slowest way and it goes stale fast, but nothing stays linked. Remove account numbers before you share anything.

Your Safety Checklist

  • Read-only first

Pick a connection with read-only access. It can look, but it can't move money.

  • Never hand over your bank password

Sign in through the bank or the app's own screen, not by typing your login into a chat or a third-party tool.

  • Know what it can see

Accounts, transactions, credit? Check the list before you say yes.

  • Know how to turn it off

Find the disconnect button in the app and in your assistant before you connect.

The full seven-question checklist is in Is it safe to connect your bank to AI?

Start With Your Money Type

The best first question depends on how you handle money. Spenders move money fast, Savers hold on tight, Scramblers juggle, and Strategists have a plan that needs to scale. Each type has a different first fix, so each asks AI something different.

  • Spender

“Where did my money go last month, and which one category would free up the most?”

  • Saver

“How much can I spend on fun this month without touching my savings?”

  • Scrambler

“What's due before my next paycheck, and what's left after it's paid?”

  • Strategist

“What should I automate next to grow my savings without checking it every week?”

Common questions

It can be, if the connection is read-only, you sign in through the bank or app instead of sharing your password, and you know how to disconnect. The full checklist is in Is it safe to connect your bank to AI?

Not through a read-only connection, because it has no tools that move money. The Fifecta connector is read-only. For any other tool, check what it says it can do before you connect it.

Finances in ChatGPT is built into ChatGPT and links your accounts straight to it. A connector links your assistant to a money app you already use, so it answers from that app's budget and plan. See the finance MCP directory for a side by side.

Start with your Money Type's first fix. A Spender asks where the money went, a Saver asks what's safe to spend, a Scrambler asks what's due before payday, and a Strategist asks what to automate next. The budget prompt generator writes the prompt for you.
