Financial Advice for Your 20s

The money moves that set you up for life: income growth, debt strategy, investing basics, and systems that work for your Money Type.

By Taylor PriceFounder, Priceless Tay · GoBankingRates Top 100 Money Expert

What you'll learn

  1. 01Increase income AND optimize what you keep
  2. 02Pay off high-interest debt before aggressive investing
  3. 03Automate investing so lifestyle creep doesn't win
  4. 04Run monthly money dates, not annual panic sessions

Your 20s are the compounding decade

Every dollar invested in your 20s has decades to grow. Every high-interest dollar you carry has decades to hurt you. The win isn't being perfect. It's building a system that survives your Money Type.

Income: grow it, then protect it

Negotiate early and often. Track your take-home pay, not your salary headline. When income jumps:

  • Increase savings/investing first
  • Then adjust lifestyle, not the other way around

Use the rent affordability calculator before signing a lease that eats your raise.

Debt: have a plan, not a panic

List every balance, APR, and minimum payment. Pick a method:

  • Avalanche: highest interest first (saves the most money)
  • Snowball: smallest balance first (builds momentum)

Model one debt with the debt payoff calculator, then repeat for the rest.

Investing: boring beats brilliant

Your 20s reward consistency:

  • Capture any 401(k) employer match. It's free money
  • Fund a Roth IRA if you're eligible
  • Use low-cost index funds; ignore hot stock tips

Emergency fund: non-negotiable

Aim for 3–6 months of essential expenses in a separate savings account. Variable income? Target 6–12 months.

Calculate your target and how long it'll take at your current savings rate.

Money dates beat money anxiety

Once a month, 20 minutes:

  1. What came in?
  2. What went out?
  3. What's the one adjustment for next month?

Your Money Type determines what derails you. Take the quiz so your system fits your brain.
