Your FUNDS Worksheet

Fill it in step order, the same way the chapter does, and switch on the filled-in example if you get stuck. Give Steps 1 through 4 a full afternoon. Every dollar of your take home pay gets a job, and the whole plan lands on zero.

Or fill it in online

In the print window, choose Save as PDF to keep a copy. It prints the version you see.

Your worksheet. Who you're becoming, and who you've been.

Step 1Who you're becoming

Give each goal a start and a goal date. Divide the price by the months in between, then by your paychecks in a month.

Step 2Who you've been

Pull your last three months. Sort every transaction into a line under its fund, add the lines up to each fund total, then average.

Step 3Build the new plan

Copy each line's average from Step 2. Give every line its new monthly amount. The difference is what has to move.

Step 4Make it land on zero

Every dollar gets a job, so this should come out to exactly $0.

Take home pay − all five funds = Should be $0

If it comes out negative, cut in this order.

  1. 1 Desires

Cut it down to what fits. Keep what you'd miss most.

  2. 2 Fixed

One phone call can lower a bill for every month after it.

  3. 3 Needs

Change how you shop for groceries and the rest of what changes.

Then set it up

Step 8

My borrowing rule

The one we recommend: Needs and Desires can borrow from each other, and nothing else can. Fixed and Unexpected stay off limits for anything you chose. Only something you didn't choose that has a deadline comes out of Unexpected.

Step 9

My Money Type and its one adjustment

Savers spend Desires, Spenders add speed bumps, Scramblers add dates, and Strategists set a review date.
