Card offers (welcome bonuses, annual fees, APRs, rewards rates, and credits) change often. Check the card issuer's site for current terms before you apply.
The best credit card rewards spending you already do, on a balance you pay in full every month. These five picks are sorted by goal: rent, a first card, a first travel card, frequent flying, and simple travel miles.
If those labels are new to you: your Money Type is the pattern that shows up when money gets emotional. Some people buy before they think, some hold money until using it feels weird, some scramble when everything is due, and some are ready for the next level. Those are the Spender, the Saver, the Scrambler, and the Strategist. Not sure which one you are? Take the free Money Type quiz.
Before you pick: the one rule that matters most
If you carry a balance month to month, the card's APR matters more than any reward here, because interest on a carried balance usually costs more than the rewards earn. Pay it down first. The debt payoff calculator shows how long that takes.
BILT Mastercard
Best for renters
The BILT Mastercard lets you earn points on rent, so it rewards a bill you already pay instead of new shopping.
Why we like BILT
- Points on rent: Bilt's rent rewards terms, including any fees or caps, have changed over time, so check Bilt's site for how it works now.
- Travel transfers: Points can transfer to airline and hotel partners.
- Rent and your credit: Bilt has offered rent reporting to the credit bureaus. Check whether it's available for you.
Discover it® Card
Best for students and first cards
Why we like the Discover it Card
- Cash back rewards: Cash back on everyday purchases, with higher cash back in rotating categories each quarter when you activate them, up to a quarterly maximum. Check Discover's site for the current categories and rates.

How to use a rewards card without paying for it
Rewards only come out ahead if the card never costs you interest. Set autopay to the full statement balance the day the card arrives, and pay before the statement closes to keep your reported credit utilization low (the 30% credit utilization rule explains the timing). A purchase you wouldn't have made without the card isn't a reward.

FAQ
What is the best credit card for beginners?
A no-annual-fee card with simple cash back is usually the easiest first card. A lower-fee travel card can work too, as long as you pay in full every month. The first goal is a record of on-time payments.
Is a travel card worth it if you don't travel much?
Usually not, if it has an annual fee. Travel cards earn their fee through credits and perks you'd actually use. If you take one or two trips a year, compare a cash back card first.
Do card rewards matter if you carry a balance?
Not much. Interest on a carried balance is usually larger than the rewards you earn on the same spending. Pay the balance down first, then choose a card based on rewards.
What to do next
Pick the one goal that matters most right now, whether that's rent, a first card, or travel, and check only that card on the issuer's site. One card you pay in full every month does more for you than three you have to juggle.
