Common questions
Add what you have now, what you put in each month and an assumed average return, then let it grow until your retirement age. Example with hypothetical numbers: starting at 25 with $5,000 saved and adding $300 a month at a 7% average return, the balance projects to about $869,001 at 65. You put in $149,000 and growth adds about $720,001. Real returns go up and down, so treat it as an estimate.
It projects your balance at retirement using current savings, monthly contributions, and an assumed average annual return. Results are estimates, not guarantees.
Many long-term stock-heavy portfolios use 7 to 10% as a planning assumption before inflation. Conservative planners often use 6 to 7%.
As early as possible. Time in the market matters as much as how much you contribute each month.
